HR Manager, North America – Salt Lake City, UT

Our client, Thiess, a leading global mining services provider headquartered in Brisbane, Australia, with 12,000 employees worldwide, is seeking an experienced Human Resources Manager to support their rapidly expanding North American operations. This key leadership role, based in Salt Lake City and reporting to the North American Business Leader, will drive Thiess’ strategic HR initiatives as they grow their presence in the United States and Canada. As a trusted advisor to the leadership team, the HR Manager will be responsible for developing and implementing effective people strategies that align with the organization’s overall business objectives.

The ideal candidate will bring a minimum of 15 years of HR leadership experience in the North American market to oversee a current employee population of around 350 in the US and Canada. We’re pursuing interest from those offering proven success in supporting multi-site operations and interfacing with senior leadership. Candidates should possess a blend of strategic and tactical capabilities, exceptional communication skills, and the ability to advise and influence enterprise-wide in a global environment. An understanding of the mining industry is preferred and the ability to build relationships and interface effectively with site managers, engineers, and project managers is crucial.

In this role, the HR Manager will oversee a team of four and have a dotted line reporting relationship to the Head of People and Capability for the Americas. The successful HR Manager will be expected to bring strategic leadership, demonstrating keen business and operational acumen, while providing valuable insights and recommendations to senior leadership. The position offers significant opportunities for impact and growth, with Thiess planning substantial increase in size over the next three years, potentially including mergers or acquisitions.

Key responsibilities include spearheading short-term initiatives such as optimizing and enhancing the HR team, managing project demobilization and mobilization, implementing a technical training facility, and developing a global mobility plan.

Long-term projects involve corporate diversity and inclusion strategies, talent management, and the rollout of a new HR ERP system. The role is also responsible for compensation and benefits in North America, in collaboration with the HR leader for the Americas.

Regular site visits will be an integral part of the job, ensuring a hands-on approach to HR management across various locations. Travel is expected to include about one week per month at work sites, plus international trips to Chile and Australia, as necessary.
